Program Summary
Dr. Mohan Viswanathan reviews the limitations of presently available drugs for atrial fibrillation and presents information on potential mechanisms for new mixed channel and atrial selective antiarrhythmic drugs, including Vernakalant and Ranolazine.

Learning Objectives

- List potential limitations of presently available antiarrhythmic drugs.
- Restate the cellular targets of new drugs and contrast with conventional drugs
- Recall the efficacy of Vernakalant demonstrated in the CRAFT and ACT trials and the theoretical limitations of the mechanism in action.
- Describe the mechanism of action of Ranolazine and how this is antiarrhythmic in nature.
