The purpose of this section of the WLI website is to provide information on research opportunities of potential interest to women EPs. Here, you can find information about selected clinical trials that are in the planning stage or underway.
Information on this site is intended to help women:
- Share their research interests with each other (offline)
- Make women, particularly younger women faculty, aware of ongoing clinical trials in which they may be interested in participating
- Identify ongoing clinical trials, some of which may be recruiting centers
- Inspire clinical research on topics specifically applicable to women, including topics related to gender differences in arrhythmias
Below is a preliminary list of EP trials. It is not in any way comprehensive or complete at this point, but is a start. We have included the following categories:
Ongoing Clinical Trials Initiated by Women EPs
REPLACE - Implantable Cardiac Pulse Generator Replacement Registry
PI: Jeanne Poole, MD
Sponsor: Biotronik
Clinical Trials.gov Identifier: NCT00395447
Objective: The objective of this study is to prospectively estimate the all-cause complication rates at 6-months for patients undergoing generator replacement due to elective replacement indicator (ERI), advisory, or upgrade without a planned system modification or with a planned system modification. Secondarily, this study aims to compare the influence of baseline variables contributing to the all-cause complication rates for subjects undergoing generator replacement. Learn more.
Development Phase Clinical Trials Initiated By Women EPs
Statin Therapy for the Prevention of Atrial Fibrillation
PI: Anne Curtis, MD, FHRS, FACC, FAHA
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: Pending
Objective: To evaluate whether rosuvastin therapy delay the time to first recurrence of symptomatic atrial fibrillation in comparison to placebo and to evaluate whether non-specific mediators of inflammation and leukocyte expression of cardiovascular signaling genes are associated with delay in first recurrence of atrial fibrillation
Status: In process of recruiting sites
IMPLANT SHOCK - ICD (“IMPortance of Looking At the Need to Test SHOCK therapy at the time of ICD implantation”)
PI: Andrea Russo, MD, FACC
Sponsor: Medtronic (pilot)
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: n/a
Objective: Pending from Andrea
Status: Pending from Andrea
Ongoing Trials of Gender-Related Differences
Placement of Permanent Pacemaker Study
PI: n/a
Sponsor: Weill Medical College of Cornell University
ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00512161
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the predictors for placement of permanent pacemakers soon after cardiac surgery. The study will measure the following to see what influence, if any, they have on predicting the need for permanent pacemaker implantation: type of cardiac surgery, gender of patient, age, pre-operative heart rhythm and rate, duration on cardiopulmonary bypass, immediate post cardiopulmonary bypass heart rhythm and rate, all heart rhythms and rates identified in the postoperative period prior to permanent pacemaker implantation, underlying heart rhythm and rates when permanent pacemaker is placed, ejection fraction before surgery, ejection fraction immediately post-cardiopulmonary bypass. Learn more.

Information on clinical trials changes rapidly. For the most up-to-date information, see NIH’s registry of government and privately funded clinical trials, http://www.clinicaltrials.gov. This site provides information about a trial's purpose, who may participate, locations, and phone numbers to obtain more details.
