WASHINGTON, DC — The Heart Rhythm Society and its official journal, HeartRhythm, announced today the launch of a new scholarship program for high school students.

Funded by Elsevier, the publishing company of HeartRhythm, the HeartRhythm Journal’s Student Exploration Award is open to junior and senior high school students with plans to continue their education on a collegiate level upon graduation.

The one-time scholarship award is based on a 2,000 word essay submission. For consideration, students are asked to research and explain three to five, clinical or non-clinical career options within the field of heart rhythm disorders, before selecting one role that is most appealing to them, with an explanation of why he/she might be interested in pursuing this career option.

“The HeartRhythm Journal and the Heart Rhythm Society recognize that there are many future leaders in America’s high school classrooms, who may be unaware of the vastness of the field of heart rhythm disorders when considering their career choices,” said Douglas P. Zipes, MD, editor of HeartRhythm. “This scholarship program will give all participants an opportunity to explore the field, while also helping one winner meet their financial goals for college.”

The winner will be selected by a panel of five judges based on his/her essay’s level of relevance and adherence to the scholarship’s theme, inclusion of relevant research, and overall style and clarity. The $1,000 scholarship will be presented to this individual at the Heart Rhythm Society’s 31st Annual Scientific Sessions and President’s Reception at The Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO, on May 14.

“The Heart Rhythm Society is pleased to be able to offer the award winner the opportunity to attend some of our events at this year’s Annual Scientific Sessions,” said Richard, L. Page, MD, President of the Heart Rhythm Society. “The Society is making great strides for individuals suffering from cardiac arrhythmias and we hope to inspire the award winner to join in the fight, but most importantly to be the best that he/she can be in their collegiate studies.”

The deadline for scholarship applications is April 16, 2010.
