WASHINGTON, DC — The Heart Rhythm Society, the international leader in science, education and advocacy for cardiac arrhythmia professionals and patients, has named Lawrence S. Stern, Ph.D., as the Society’s new Vice President of Education.
Dr. Stern will lead in the development, planning and execution of the Society’s patient education initiatives, continuing medical education (CME), and non-CME programs and activities for cardiac pacing and electrophysiology professionals worldwide.
“The Heart Rhythm Society is deeply committed to developing educational opportunities for health care professionals that will improve the health of patients with or at risk of heart rhythm disorders,” stated James Youngblood, CEO of the Heart Rhythm Society. “With more than 25 years of experience in medical research and business strategy development, Larry is best able to lead our efforts to enhance and increase our educational programs.”
Dr. Stern most recently was Executive Director in External Medical and Scientific Affairs at Merck & Co., Inc., where he provided leadership to high profile company initiatives aimed at improving customer-centric business processes. He also was selected as one of 12 high-potential employees out of 7,000 to conceive, plan and implement a multi-year initiative to differentiate Merck from its competitors. He was honored with multiple Innovation and Technology Awards from the organization for his service.
Dr. Stern began his career as a Research Scientist at The Cleveland Clinic and Research Scientist/Adjunct Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University focusing on osteoporosis, bioengineering, and orthopaedic sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies/Orthopaedic Sciences from The Ohio State University; a Master of Arts in Biology (specializing in Electron Microscopy) from Hofstra University; and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from The Ohio State University. He has authored 14 peer-reviewed publications, two book chapters, and 45 abstracts. In addition, he holds Six Sigma Black Belt and Change Management Certifications.
