On April 22nd, 2005 the American Medical Association (AMA) sent letters to the Speaker of the House J. Dennis Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, MD, expressing support for physician-owned specialty hospitals and opposition to an extension of the 18-month moratorium on physician referrals to specialty hospitals, which was imposed by the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003 (MMA).
