Society Details Lessons Learned in the CED Process

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has a mechanism, known as coverage with evidence development (CED), through which the Agency provides conditional payment for services while generating clinical data to demonstrate their impact on health outcomes.

At the end of 2011, CMS announced that the Agency is seeking public comments on how to improve the CED process. In particular, CMS solicited comment on the following areas:

  • Implementation of CED through the national coverage determination (NCD) or other avenues under Part A and Part B
  • Potential impact of CED on the Medicare program and its beneficiaries
  • Suggested approach to CED to maximize benefit to Medicare beneficiaries

In response to this request for input, the Society detailed lessons learned and suggested new approaches to improve the CED policy. Read the full letter (PDF, 114K).
