The Alliance for a Stronger FDA, of which the Heart Rhythm Society is a member, sent a letter on November 24, 2008 to President-Elect Obama's transition team pointing out the importance of a rapid appointment of the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner and recommending the amount of $2.25 billion for the FY 2010 FDA budget, an increase of $386 million. The Alliance for a Stronger FDA is a group of 185 members that includes leading consumer, patient, and industry groups advocating for the appropriate funding of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) so that it can fulfill its public health and consumer protection functions.
The recommended figure of $2.25 billion represents more than a 20 percent increase over the FY 09 baseline and reflects a 30 to 40 percent increase over the FY 08 baseline. These amounts are needed to ensure that the Agency has the resources it needs to further fund its food science and inspection capacity, further fund drug and device regulation, and upgrade critical information technology systems.
