Society in Attendence as the White House Holds Health Care Reform Press Conference
U.S. President Barack Obama held a press conference on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 announcing the next steps for health care reform, following the February 25 health care summit. Heart Rhythm Society member Ted Friehling, MD attended the event on behalf of the Society.
During the press conference, President Obama unveiled a three-step plan to pass health care reform. The House would pass the Senate’s health care bill and modify it through the reconcialation process.
Hoping to gather additional support, President Obama had stated on Tuesday, March 2 that he may incorporate Republican proposals in his health reform package. Among these Republican proposals are:
- Increase funds for state-based tort reform demonstrations
- Remove the special deal that protected certain Medicare Advantage beneficiaries
- Set up undercover investigations of health care providers that receive federal reimbursements
- Increase Medicaid payments to doctors
- Allow high-deductible health plans and health savings accounts to be offered in the exchange
The goal is to pass health care reform before the congressional spring recess, which is scheduled to start on March 29. The Heart Rhythm Society will be monitoring future developments and will update its members on the progress of health care reform.
