The Society's goal is to work with Congressional legislators to encourage development and implementation of optimal health care policies.

The Heart Rhythm Society's congressional advocacy efforts focus on issues of critical importance to the heart rhythm physician, scientist, allied health professional and patient, including coverage and payment for heart rhythm procedures and services; access to safe medical devices and advanced technology; funding for arrhythmia-related research; and sudden cardiac arrest prevention.

Physician reimbursement is an important issue for the Society's Health Policy department

Medicare Physician Payments
The Heart Rhythm Society is working on an ongoing basis for legislative action to prevent a 40 percent decrease in physician reimbursement over the next nine years, which would negatively impact patient access to heart rhythm care. Learn more »

The Heart Rhythm Society believes that the basic research conducted by NIH is a fundamental building block in the prevention and cure of disease, and advocates for a fully funded agency, ensuring the health of the public. Learn more »

Amendments to the Health Care Reform Law
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law on March 23, 2010. In coming years, legislators will introduce bills and/or amendments to the health care law to modify it. This section will provide an overview of the proposed bills that will impact the electrophysiology practices. Learn more»
Health Care Reform Legislation
The Heart Rhythm Society works with specialty medicine to analyze the impact of proposed health care reform legislative actions and communicates any concerns or suggestions to Capitol Hill. Learn more »
Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
Heart Rhythm Society recommends that Congress recognize the importance of post-market surveillance, analysis, and reporting of ICDs and pacemakers in ensuring patient safety. However, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) does not currently have the resources to make the necessary enhancements to the surveillance systems. The Society,along with other organizations, is advocating for a fully funded FDA. Learn more »

Atrial Fibrillation Awareness and Prevention
The Society is educating Congress about atrial fibrillation (AF) and advocating the need for increased public education and awareness and research funding into the causes and risk factors of AF. Learn more »

Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness and Prevention
The Heart Rhythm Society is educating Congress about Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA), which kills 250,000 Americans each year, and the need for increased public education and awareness and research funding into the causes and risk factors of SCA in both youth and adults. Learn more »

Industry/Physician Relationships
As per the Heart Rhythm Society's Code of Ethics, patient welfare must be paramount in the practice of medicine; under no circumstances shall a member of the Society place his or her self interest above the welfare of the patient. Learn more »

Medical Imaging
The CARE Act seeks to "improve the quality and value of healthcare by increasing the safety and accuracy of medical imaging examinations and radiation therapy treatments, thereby reducing duplication of services and decreasing costs." Learn more »

Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act (GINA)
The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), signed into law on May 21, 2008, is the first and only federal legislation that provides protections against discrimination based on an individual's genetic information in health insurance coverage and employment settings. Learn more »
