titlelines Ideas on Trial

Heart Rhythm 2011 will feature three new Ideas on Trial sessions that offer a 'twist' on traditional debates.

Photo of scales of justice and gavel Ideas on Trial is a dynamic and interactive modification of the traditional debate session. Instead of two debaters taking the pro and con side of an issue, an actual idea goes on 'trial.'

A 'Chief Justice' and two 'Associate Justices' will preside over the trial. One of the debaters becomes the prosecutor who is against the idea on trial, while the second debater is the defense attorney. Each one of the attorneys may call several witnesses to help make their point. The Chief Justice tries to maintain control of the courtroom. Eventually, the 'jury' — which is the audience — will make a decision as to whether the idea is “appropriate” or “guilty”.

Three “Ideas on Trial” sessions will be presented, with Charles L. Byrd, MD; John D. Fisher, MD, FHRS, CCDS and David S. Cannom, MD, FHRS serving in the Chief Justice role. These interesting sessions will be a complete departure from an old style debate.
