Activity Description:

Using a combination of didactic presentations, panel discussions, and question and answer sessions, our goal is to educate the participants on state-of-the-art information concerning the pathophysiology and treatment of ventricular arrhythmias. There will also be VT ablation cases streamed live from the University of Pennsylvania during which a moderated panel discussion and question and answer session will occur to educate and demonstrate to audience members the most up to date techniques for complex ablation and other procedures.

The program is taught by a select group of international leaders and pioneers in the field of electrophysiology, pathology, pharmacology and basic/translational research including members of the faculty from the University of Pennsylvania Health System, Department of Electrophysiology. The course is structured to meet the educational needs of electrophysiologists, cardiologists, and associated professionals with an interest in the care of patients with ventricular arrhythmias. The faculty has been strongly urged to present cutting-edge information with the aim of advancing the field through discussion and sharing information.

The goal of the symposium is to answer clinical questions while raising new ones all the while educating the participants. Our distinguished group of faculty will speak on a variety of topics in an effort to provide a current review of new information on the pathophysiology of ventricular arrhythmias and to provide an in-depth understanding of the various management strategies that are currently being developed for the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias in various disease states, including non-pharmacological therapies such as implantable device therapy and advances in catheter ablation techniques. The scientific basis for, clinical experience with and limitations of new techniques and therapies will also be discussed. The agenda has been chosen based upon reviews of prior years' evaluations, plenary discussions at national meetings, and the recent literature.

Learning Objectives:

  • Provide a current review of new information on the basic pathophysiology of ventricular arrhythmias.
  • Provide an in-depth understanding of the various management strategies that are currently being developed for the management of ventricular arrhythmias in various disease states, including non-pharmacological therapies such as implantable device therapy and advances in catheter ablation techniques.
  • Describe the role of remote hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Discuss the use of and techniques for ECGi, MRI in the EP lab, voltage guided biopsy, and high density mapping of VT circuits.
  • Describe risk stratification and treatment including ablation, TCD, and myomectomy in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
  • Discuss strategies to improve treatment of patients with ventricular arrhythmias and structural heart disease including "bail out" strategies after failed catheter ablation.
  • Understand the current state of the use of antiarrhythmic drug therapy for ventricular arrhythmias.
  • Identify techniques to improve ablation success for idiopathic arrhythmias including use of advanced imaging.
  • Describe the status of ongoing multicenter VT related trials and discuss which questions need to be answered by trials in the future.
  • Understand the current status and future role for implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (lCD) in the management of sudden cardiac death.
  • Describe the science critical to the understanding of ventricular arrhythmias and treatment of ventricular arrhythmias including:
    • The role of the autonomic nervous system in ventricular arrhythmogenesis
    • Biophysics of ablation
    • Anatomic substrate for ventricular tachycardia (VT)
