2015 Heart Rhythm Society Expert Consensus Statement on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Postural Tachycardia Syndrome, Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia, and Vasovagal Syncope

May 13, 2015—This document has three objectives: 1) to establish working criteria for the diagnosis of postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST), and vasovagal syncope (VVS); 2) to provide guidance and recommendations on their assessment and management; and to 3) identify key areas in which knowledge is lacking to highlight opportunities for future collaborative research efforts.


 This document was reaffirmed on November 18, 2020, and will be formally assessed by November 2025.

This international consensus statement was written by experts in the field who were chosen by the Heart Rhythm Society, in collaboration with representatives from the American Autonomic Society (AAS), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association (AHA), the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS), the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society (PACES), and the Sociedad Latinoamericana de Estimulacion Cardiaca y Electrofisiologia (SOLAECE)-Latin American Society of Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology.

This document is intended to help front-line cardiologists, arrhythmia specialists, and other health care professionals interested in the care of patients who present with presumed postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS), inappropriate sinus tachycardia (IST), and vasovagal syncope (VVS). It is not intended to be a comprehensive narrative review, as excellent reviews, chapters, and entire volumes have appeared recently.
