|This document has been retired and replaced by "2014 AHA/ACC/HRS Guideline for the Management of Patients with Atrial Fibrillation."|
This guideline update is based on a report of the American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association Task Force on Practice Guidelines.
It focuses on several areas in which new data on the management of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) have become available, including:
- catheter ablation and its usefulness in maintaining normal sinus rhythm in AF patients
- recommendations for heart rate control
- combined use of antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy
- use of dronedarone
These updated guideline recommendations on the treatment of AF reflect a consensus of expert opinion after a thorough review, primarily of late-breaking clinical trials and other new data. The full-text guidelines published in 2006 remain current with the exception of the recommendations presented in this document.
