Call for Editor-in-Chief Applications

Heart Rhythm, the official journal of the Heart Rhythm Society, Cardiac Electrophysiology Society, and the Pediatric & Congenital Electrophysiology Society, is seeking candidates to apply for the position of Editor-in-Chief. Founded in 2004 and published by Elsevier, Heart Rhythm is a unique journal for heart rhythm-related studies focused both on fundamental discovery and clinical applicability. 

The Heart Rhythm Editor-in-Chief is responsible for the solicitation, submission, evaluation, peer review, and selection of scientific and related materials for publication, including research reports, review articles, clinical studies, case reports, editorials, and special issues.

The selected candidate's term will begin on January 1, 2024, upon the term culmination of current Editor-in-Chief Peng-Sheng Chen, MD, FHRS.

The application deadline is February 1, 2023.

The Heart Rhythm Editor-in-Chief is responsible for:

  • Recruiting high quality manuscript submissions
  • Soliciting review articles, viewpoints, and editorials, as appropriate
  • Prompt turnaround of manuscript decisions and publications
  • Evaluating submissions for originality, importance, quality, accuracy, clarity, and appropriateness for the readership 
  • Guiding article acceptance rate to manage publication quality and size
  • Developing core article types: review existing article types and experiment with new article types
  • Maintaining high publication standards
  • Organizing and directing the peer-review process for regular articles and special issues using an online submission system, in line with the journal’s publication schedule 
  • Serving as an expert reviewer in areas of personal expertise and as a deciding judge for contested decisions or manuscripts with divergent reviewer recommendations
  • Communicating editorial suggestions and decisions to authors
  • Adjudicating editorial disputes including conflict of interest issues, errors, and retractions
  • Referring appropriate articles to the Society’s companion journals for consideration
  • Establishing a group of associate editors and an editorial board with a broad spectrum of expertise in clinical, translational, and basic science
  • Updating Editorial Board members with regular communications and seeking Journal Subcommittee input on content, innovation, and policy matters
  • Directing and implementing journal policy within the mission and financial parameters established by the Heart Rhythm Society’s Board of Directors
  • Contributing to the journal’s development strategy in collaboration with the Journal Subcommittee, editorial team, and publisher 
  • Ensuring that the content and delivery of the journal is aligned with the Society’s strategic plan
  • Presiding over an annual meeting or reception of the Editorial Board 
  • Attending monthly calls with the Publisher and other Heart Rhythm Society Editors-in-Chief
  • Representing the journal at appropriate national and international meetings/venues
  • Traveling to and participating in Heart Rhythm Society meetings, and taking part in ad hoc telephone conferences as requested; presenting Heart Rhythm status reports to the Heart Rhythm Society’s Board of Directors, Journal Subcommittee, and staff liaison(s)
  • Timely response to communications and business matters and proactive compliance with publisher deadlines 
  • Responding to requests from the press in conjunction with the Heart Rhythm Society’s media relations office
  • Reviewing and approving advertisements submitted by the Publisher’s commercial sales team
  • Serving as a Guest (non-voting) member of the Journal Subcommittee

Candidate Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

  • A strong vision for Heart Rhythm's development, with a focus on enhancing digital offerings and expanding the journal's social media presence 
  • A profound commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in the development of the editorial board, authorship, and content
  • International professional recognition in the field of cardiac electrophysiology and pacing
  • An understanding of basic and clinical science in the field of cardiac electrophysiology
  • Extensive publication history
  • Prior reviewer and editorial experience
  • Familiarity with and enthusiastic interest in the editorial process, including peer review and publication ethics
  • Experience serving in a leadership role for a peer-reviewed journal 
  • Adherence to the Heart Rhythm Society's Code of Ethics and Policies, including relationships with industry and disclosure requirements
  • Strong work ethic and a reputation for fairness
  • Active membership with the Heart Rhythm Society
