Call for Public Comment

Public comment promotes greater transparency in the clinical practice document development process and provides an opportunity for key stakeholders to critically review and offer feedback on draft recommendations prior to a clinical document’s finalization and publication.

Public comment promotes transparency in the clinical practice document development and enables the Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) to engage interested stakeholders, provide a higher-quality product to the membership, and facilitate implementation and dissemination efforts.

2024 HRS Expert consensus statement on arrhythmias in the athlete: Evaluation, treatment, and return to play

The draft document is available for public comment until February 21, 2024.

The Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) invites interested stakeholders to submit comments on the draft 2024 HRS Expert consensus statement on arrhythmias in the athlete: Evaluation, treatment, and return to play. This open public comment stage provides greater transparency in the clinical practice document development process and the opportunity for key stakeholders to offer feedback before the document’s finalization and publication. All comments will be reviewed, and recommendations edited as appropriate.

This document is being developed in collaboration with the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), the Asia Pacific Heart Rhythm Society (APHRS), the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), the Latin American Heart Rhythm Society (LAHRS), and the Pediatric and Congenital Electrophysiology Society (PACES). The overarching goal of this document is to provide evidence-based and expert consensus recommendations on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of arrhythmias in athletes of all ages, with an emphasis on shared decision-making.

Document goals:

  • Understand clinical considerations that are unique to the athlete population
  • Recognize the role of shared decision-making in the management, treatment, and return to play of athletes with arrhythmias
  • Understand the epidemiology of sudden cardiac arrest in an athlete, emergency action plans, work-up, and long-term management of the athlete surviving an SCA and returning to play, as well as ICD management in the athlete
  • Recognize symptoms in the athlete that could be suggestive of an underlying cardiovascular condition versus those suggestive of exercise-related benign etiologies
  • Appreciate the different strategies available for managing an athlete with atrial fibrillation
  • Appreciate the different strategies for evaluation and management of athletes with ventricular arrhythmias
  • Understand the management of athletes with inherited arrhythmias and cardiomyopathies to minimize risk in those returning to play
  • Recognize the risks of sudden cardiac death in athletes with asymptomatic Wolff-Parkinson-White and the factors to consider when weighing catheter ablation versus conservative management
