CIED Remote Monitoring Clinic Staffing Calculator
This staffing calculator is a tool to help your clinic determine the number of full-time equivalent (FTE) staff needed to effectively follow patients with cardiac implantable electrical devices (CIED) on remote monitoring (RM). The recommended FTE staffing results consists of clinicians, administrative personnel, and third-party resources needed for safe and efficient administration of remote monitoring services.
About the Calculator
Managing remote monitoring (RM) for patients with cardiac implantable electrical devices (CIED) involves a multitude of tasks, such as connectivity troubleshooting, patient education, data review, alert management, and documentation. Ensuring high-quality patient care in RM clinics requires a comprehensive approach that accounts for the workload associated with all RM-related tasks, not just alert management.
The 2023 HRS/EHRA/APHRS/LAHRS Expert Consensus Statement on Practical Management of the Remote Device Clinic underscores the critical role of adequate staffing and appropriate patient-to-staff ratios in effectively managing RM clinic workflows. To provide optimal care, it is reasonable that clinics maintain a minimum of 3.0 full-time equivalents per 1,000 patients on RM, encompassing both clinical and administrative staff.
Recognizing the need for a tailored approach to estimating staffing needs, the authors of the consensus statement have developed the CIED Remote Monitoring Clinic Staffing Calculator. This tool estimates the required number of full-time equivalent (FTE) staff for the safe and efficient administration of remote monitoring services based on:
- The number of patients followed in the RM clinic for each CIED device type
- The number of hours in a full-time work week, and
- The number of weeks worked in a year for full-time staff
STEP 1: In the Patient Details section, enter the number of patients followed by your clinic who have pacemakers (PM), implantable defibrillators (ICD), cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices (including CRT pacemakers [CRT-P] and CRT defibrillators [CRT-D]), and implantable loop recorders (ILR).
STEP 2: In the Work Details section, as defined by your institution, enter the number of hours in a full-time work week (FTE hours/week) and the number of weeks worked in a year for a full-time worker (FTE weeks/year). When entering the FTE weeks/year, exclude vacations, personal time off, and statutory holidays.
STEP 3: Click on the Calculate Staffing Needs button to generate the recommended FTE. Click on Return to Calculator button to go back and reset the calculator.
- Total RM FTE is the recommended FTE needed for the portion of RM follow-up
- Total In-clinic FTE is the recommended FTE needed for the portion of in-clinic follow-up
- Total FTE is the recommended FTE needed in total for the combination of RM and in-clinic follow-up
