GLOWE
Program Description
The Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) is pleased to offer the
Growth and Leadership Opportunity for Women in Electrophysiology (GLOWE) program.
HRS is the leading membership society and the voice for the electrophysiology ecosystem. Our membership boasts nearly 7,500 practitioners in more than 90 countries.
Cardiac electrophysiology (EP) has one of the lowest representations of women within medicine. Only 12% of clinical EP trainees are women, and shockingly only 9% of board-certified EPs are women. GLOWE is a group of peers that will not only provide a platform for women in EP to share and strengthen best practices but drive personal growth and deep connections with like-minded professionals in the field.
HRS's Growth and Leadership Opportunity for Women in Electrophysiology (GLOWE) program addresses women's opportunities and challenges within the context of an EP career and will help participants put effective, collaborative methods of leadership to work within HRS and their organizations. Participants will focus on developing leadership skills and personal influence as well as exploring strategies for goal development and advancement strategies.
GLOWE offers women electrophysiologists with a unique opportunity to enhance their leadership and career development skills through education, coaching, and building professional networks. The purpose of GLOWE is to provide the knowledge and skills needed to enhance the path to leadership within HRS and academic or private practice medicine. Focus areas will include strategic communication skills, negotiation practices, management, and conflict resolution. As the leading organization for EP leaders, the value of being a part of this career shaping experience is unparalleled.
The 2024-2025 GLOWE program will be led by Chairs Janet Han, MD, FHRS and Vice Chair Kamala Tamirisa, MD, FHRS.

GLOWE 2023 Fall Huddle
When it comes to thriving in the world of electrophysiology, no journey is meant to be taken alone. The GLOWE program, short for 'Growth and Leadership Opportunity for Women in Electrophysiology,' understands this deeply. This year's GLOWE Fall Huddle at the HRX conference on September 21, 2023, was a testament to the power of mentorship, knowledge-sharing, and building connections in the world of EP.
Bridge the Gap: From Clinical Training to Leadership
The Fall Huddle marked the second in-person gathering for the 2023-2024 program year, and its significance was palpable from the very beginning. The GLOWE program aims to address the unique opportunities and challenges that women encounter in the field of electrophysiology. It equips participants with effective leadership skills and fosters collaboration within HRS and their respective organizations. This half-day event, where personal growth takes center stage. GLOWE participants delved deep into various facets of leadership development. Through personalized coaching, group activities, and engaging sessions led by certified professionals, they honed vital skills to thrive in their careers.
A Journey of Self-Discovery
The day kicked off with "The GLOWE Tour 2023: Don’t Be an Anti-Hero" led by Dr. Sam Sears. Attendees explored psychological strategies designed to increase engagement in meaningful activities while maintaining self-assurance in the ever-demanding world of clinical practice. This session emphasized self-reflection and empowerment for women in electrophysiology, underlining the importance of self-care and pursuing contentment.
Navigating the Complex World of Healthcare
Next up was "The Business of EP" with Dr. Gopi Dandamudi. Emerging leaders need a comprehensive understanding of the healthcare business, especially in today's complex environment. This session provided a global perspective on the current and future state of healthcare, helping participants navigate this intricate landscape and build successful programs.
The Power of Personal Style
The final session, "Turning Personal Style into Workplace Performance" with Betty Parker, encouraged deep introspection. Attendees explored their leadership styles, discovering how others perceive them. By understanding their impact on colleagues and teams, they could make more meaningful connections. This self-awareness fosters loyalty, high performance, and overall greater productivity.
Building a Brighter Future Together
The GLOWE Fall Huddle wasn't just a gathering; it was a stepping stone towards leadership excellence. Attendees built upon the connections made at the retreat in July, leaving with valuable insights and tools to elevate their leadership journey.
As we reflect on this inspiring Fall Huddle, it's evident that the GLOWE program is a community where women in electrophysiology come together to empower one another. The stories shared, the skills honed, and the connections forged are a testament to the program's mission: to propel women forward in their EP careers.

Insights gained here paved the way for more informed choices in diverse professional contexts.
Concluding day one, amidst the relaxed ambiance of a cocktail hour, the "Sipping Success: Cocktails, Conversations, and Insights from Leading Women at Biosense Webster" session created a platform for candid conversations with leading women at Biosense Webster, our exclusive GLOWE Sponsor. This engaging panel discussion was marked by the cohort's active involvement, as their thoughtful questions sparked dynamic dialogue. Biosense Webster's influential leaders shared their journeys, trials, and triumphs, while the cohort’s questions added depth and nuance to the conversation. GLOWE participants gained practical advice and wisdom that resonated deeply and left them inspired.
Day two kicked off with a bang. A new addition to our curriculum, TED-Ed presented their Idea development workshop. Participants honed the art of idea communication, translating personal experiences and values into impactful messages. They were taught the the power of a throughline as an essential element in developing their own TED-style talk, and unlocked the secret to captivating audiences with TED's strategies as their guide; attendees embarked on a journey to refine and deliver talks that will resonate deeply.
An insightful exploration of the clinical, financial, and strategic aspects of electrophysiology (EP) awaited participants. The session, "Value of EP with Biosense Webster," unveiled the rationale behind the focus on AFib patients in hospitals. Tools for articulating EP's value and collaborating with hospitals to enhance care pathways were shared, enriching participants' understanding of the field's significance.
Tanya Menon's expertise took center stage in "Mastering the Art of Negotiation." Participants were empowered to overcome barriers inhibiting effective negotiation. Tanya guided attendees through negotiation's nuances, from preparation to overcoming obstacles. Attendees gained fresh perspectives on negotiation, challenging preconceived notions to foster collaborative environments for mutually beneficial outcomes.

As participants departed, they carried with them not just invaluable skills, but also a network of like-minded individuals.
