December 1, 2023 – The Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee convened a hearing on November 8th to discuss policy considerations for artificial intelligence (AI) in health care.
The panel heard testimony from Dr. Thomas Inglesby (Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security), Dr. Kenneth Mandl (Boston Children’s Hospital Computational Health Informatics Program), Christine Huberty (Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources), and Dr. Keith Sale (University of Kansas Health System).
During the hearing, witnesses and lawmakers discussed the implications of AI for biosecurity risks and the potential for AI to ease provider administrative burdens. Witnesses stressed the need for clinician engagement in the development of AI tools and the importance of transparency around the algorithms involved.
