February 4, 2025 – The HEARTS Act (H.R. 6829) was signed into law by President Biden on December 23, 2024.
Now that this lifesaving legislation aimed at preventing sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) in young people has been enacted, HRA is focused on ensuring funds are properly expended and the following requirements are met as mandated:
- The Department of Health and Human Services must establish a grant program to provide CPR training and AEDs in public schools;
- Thes Health and Human Services Secretary must develop specified risk assessment tools for cardiomyopathy and disseminate information about cardiomyopathy and the use of AEDs to certain school professionals, families and others;
- The Centers for Disease Control must develop guidelines regarding the proper placement of AEDs in schools and childcare centers, the establishment of sudden cardiac arrest plans, and information on best practices for CPR/AED training programs; and
- The National Institutes of Health must report on its research relating to cardiomyopathy.
As a member of the Smart Heart Sports Coalition, HRA will coordinate efforts to achieve the goals of the HEARTS Act in 2025 and beyond.
