Dr. Sanders is a clinical academic at the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital. He is the Director of the Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders at the University of Adelaide and the Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Dr Sanders is a graduate of the University of Adelaide (Australia), undertook his PhD and electrophysiology training at the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital (Australia), and post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Bordeaux II (France). He was appointed as full Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) in 2005 at the University of Adelaide.
He established and leads a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers. His research program, founded on an understanding of the substrate for AF, has continued with an evaluation of techniques to treat, reverse and prevent the substrate for AF. The work from his group has led to a paradigm change in the approach to the management of AF with the recognition of the importance of managing risk factors and comorbidities in individuals with AF.
Dr Sanders has served on several Heart Rhythm Society committees including the Young Investigator Awards Subcommiittee, Scientific Sesssions Program Committee, Education and Training Committee and most recently as the Chair of the Digital Education Committee. He received the Heart Rhythm Society’s Distinguished Scientist Award in May 2024.
He serves as associate editor for the European Heart Journal. He has published over 780 peer-reviewed manuscripts and has been recognized by Clarivate as being in the top 1% of cited researchers in clinical medicine (2023-current).
