Dr. Prashanthan Sanders is a clinical academic at the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital in Adelaide, Australia. He is Director of the Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders at the University of Adelaide and Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Dr. Sanders graduated from the University of Adelaide, undertook his PhD and electrophysiology training at the University of Melbourne and Royal Melbourne Hospital, and completed post-doctoral fellowship training at the University of Bordeaux II in France. In 2005, he was appointed Professor of Medicine in Cardiology at the University of Adelaide.
Dr. Sanders established and leads a multidisciplinary clinical and research program spanning electrophysiology, atrial fibrillation, risk factor management, digital health, implementation science, and health equity. His research program began with defining the electrophysiologic and structural substrate of atrial fibrillation and has evolved to develop strategies to treat, reverse, and prevent that substrate. Work from his group has contributed to a paradigm shift in AF management by demonstrating the central importance of addressing risk factors and comorbidities as part of comprehensive arrhythmia care.
Dr. Sanders has made substantial contributions to the Heart Rhythm Society over many years. He has served on the Young Investigator Awards Subcommittee, Scientific Sessions Program Committee, Education and Training Committee, and as Chair of the Digital Education Committee. In this role, he helped advance HRS's digital education strategy and expand contemporary approaches to member engagement, education, and global learning. He received the Heart Rhythm Society's Distinguished Scientist Award in May 2024.
He serves as Associate Editor for the European Heart Journal and has published more than 850 peer-reviewed manuscripts. He has been recognized by Clarivate as being among the top 1% of cited researchers globally in clinical medicine from 2023 to the present.
