May 23, 2021 –Â The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has determined that the evidence is sufficient to conclude that the use of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs, also referred to as defibrillators) is reasonable and necessary for the treatment of illness or injury or to improve the functioning of a malformed body member under section 1862(a)(1)(A) of the Social Security Act.
